Food for Work Programme - Implementation
A recent study found massive corruption in the Food for Works programme meant to feed the poorest people in India. Unsuprisingly, the only positive feedback was from Rajasthan, where a grassroot movement has ensured transparency in the process of payment of wages. This is but one aspect of the massive problem of corruption, which a Transparency International's study says led to Indians paying Rs. 20,000 crores as bribes last year! Hopefully the Right to Information Act will make a difference. Incidentally, the reservations expressed on the wide latitude of the Act by the President have been rightly rejected by the government.
